This session will provide a brief entre into the complicated life of one of the most significant voices in the Puritan movement. As a writer of such works as The Death of Death in the Death of Christ and The Mortification of Sin, John Owen has shaped the spiritual lives of generations, but John Owen was also thoroughly human. This session will provide some color to the overly simplistic popular portrait of Owen that has often presented him in a monochromatic fashion.

Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices

Precious Remedies: Scripture warns that Satan is not merely a distant enemy but an active being in this world. He is described as a, "roaring lion, seeking someone he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Paul warns believers to remain alert so that they are not ignorant of Satan’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11). In his classic work Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices, Puritan Thomas Brooks explains the specific strategies the devil uses to trap and discourage Christians. In this session, we'll examine several of these common devices and equip ourselves with biblical remedies to stand firm against them.

Christian contentment is indeed a rare and precious jewel. This quote reflects the big picture of what true contentment is: “Since God is contented with Himself alone, if you have Him, you may be contented with Him alone, and it may be, that is the reason why your outward comforts are taken from you, that God may be all in all to you.” This book is a Puritan guide teaching believers how to find peace and contentment in their hearts regardless of circumstances. The author offers this definition "Christian contentment is that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit, which freely submits to and delights in God's wise and fatherly disposal in every condition."

Since the 17th century, scholars have struggled to classify the Baptist movement. The credo-baptist congregations that emerged in England starting in 1611 certainly came from the same waters that precipitated the Puritans, but the question remains how far those similarities can be pressed. This session attempts to answer that question and considers the potential fall-out for this type of historical classification.

Reclaiming the Puritan Discipline of Family Worship

For the Puritans, family worship wasn't an optional extra to church life, it was the heartbeat of discipleship in the home. Parents gathered their families daily to pray, sing hymns, and read Scripture in hope to pass on their faith to their children. Yet in our own day, this once-common discipline has largely faded from Christian homes, leaving a gap that Sunday worship alone can't fill. In this session, we'll look back to recover what the Puritans understood so well: that the home is meant to be a place of worship.
